Are you someone who loves spending time outside? Whether your favorite activities include hiking through trails, running in the fresh air, kayaking on the water, cycling through scenic routes, or simply enjoying nature, the right outdoor clothing can make all the difference.

Erin and her family recently returned from an unforgettable rafting adventure on Idaho’s Salmon River. Naturally, she packed outfits that were not only practical for outdoor activities but also stylish enough to make her feel confident. After receiving many questions about what to wear for hiking dates, camping weekends, and other outdoor adventures, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to share some outfit inspiration.

No matter where your next adventure takes you, these outdoor activewear ideas prove that comfort and style can go hand in hand. Functional clothing doesn’t have to look boring. With the right pieces, you can create outfits that are ready for movement while still looking polished.

And if you’re someone who prefers spending time indoors, don’t worry. Many of these looks are also perfect for relaxing at home, casual days, and studio workouts.

What to Consider When Choosing Outdoor Activewear

Before exploring specific outfit ideas, it’s important to understand what makes outdoor clothing work well. The right fabric, fit, and design details can make a huge difference depending on your activity level and environment.

Choose Breathable and Durable Fabrics

The material of your activewear matters, especially when you’re spending time outdoors. Look for fabrics that allow air circulation, absorb moisture, dry quickly, and provide enough durability for outdoor conditions.

Thin fabrics that easily tear or snag are not ideal for hiking, camping, or adventure activities. For water-based activities, choose pieces that offer water resistance while still providing enough insulation and comfort.

Layering Is Essential

Outdoor temperatures can change quickly throughout the day, and your body temperature will also rise and fall depending on your activity.

Layering allows you to adjust your outfit as needed. Lightweight removable layers help prevent overheating while also giving you extra protection if the weather suddenly changes or rain appears.

Pay Attention to Functional Details

Small design features can greatly improve your outdoor experience. Look for clothing with convenient pockets for your phone, keys, and other essentials.

Additional features like built-in shorts under skirts, zippers instead of buttons, and fabrics with UV protection can make outdoor outfits much more practical and comfortable.

Rafting, Boating, and Fishing Outfit

For her first outdoor look, Erin and her daughter Elizabeth were fully prepared for a day of rafting, boating, and fishing on Idaho’s Salmon River.

Erin chose a lightweight, long-sleeve base layer worn over her swimsuit. The top provided extra sun protection while also creating a barrier between her skin and the cold river water.

The slim design was ideal for water activities because it reduced excess fabric while allowing comfortable movement. The fabric was quick-drying and included elastane, which helped maintain flexibility and shape.

For the bottom half, Erin wore a high-waisted pleated skirt with built-in shorts and practical pockets. The lightweight material was designed to wick away sweat and provide four-way stretch, keeping her comfortable throughout the day.

Both Erin and Elizabeth wore Keen water shoes featuring open backs, adjustable drawstrings, rubber soles, and textured grips for better traction.

To complete the outfit, Erin added a stylish Balmain hat that offered sun protection while bringing a fashionable finishing touch.

Hiking, Running, and Biking Outfit

For activities that require more movement, a one-piece athletic romper can be a great option.

This Free People runsie combines a fitted upper section with comfortable shorts, making it suitable for running, hiking, biking, and many other outdoor activities.

The top provides supportive compression, though an additional sports bra can be added underneath if extra support is needed. The design includes a strappy back, front cutout detail, back zipper pocket, and lightweight rounded shorts for increased airflow.

Available in multiple colors, this versatile piece is both practical and stylish.

Erin completed the outfit with a North Face sling backpack, Salomon hiking shoes, aviator sunglasses, and the same Balmain hat from her rafting outfit.

A helpful tip for hiking: leggings can absolutely work, but avoid cotton styles. Cotton absorbs moisture and dries slowly, which makes it less comfortable for outdoor activities and poor at regulating body temperature.

Camping Outfit

During their rafting adventure, Erin and her family focused on disconnecting and enjoying the experience, so they did not capture many photos. However, camping provides endless opportunities to create stylish and practical outdoor outfits.

For a camping look, choosing pieces that can be layered is always a smart approach. Long pants and long sleeves can protect your skin from sunlight, dirt, scratches, and insects.

Erin’s Spanx cargo joggers are designed with moisture-wicking fabric, built-in UPF 50+ sun protection, and multiple useful pockets. They are also available in different lengths, including Regular, Petite, and Tall options, making it easier to find the right fit.

The matching tank top uses the same comfortable fabric and features a flattering curved hem.

The outfit is completed with a lightweight hoodie, a sun-protective brimmed hat, aviator sunglasses, and cushioned walking sandals from Ugg with adjustable straps and strong grip.

Tennis and Pickleball Outfit

Racquet sports have become increasingly popular, especially pickleball, so a stylish court-ready outfit deserves a place on this list.

This performance dress from Vuori combines fashion and function with built-in shorts, a phone pocket, and lightweight moisture-wicking fabric.

To add a fun athletic touch, the outfit is paired with a bright pink visor, comfortable performance socks, and cotton-terry wristbands.

Whether you’re a competitive player or simply enjoying a casual match with friends, this look helps you feel confident and ready to play.

Nature Walk and Workout Outfit

The final outfit features a cropped tank top and leggings combination from Beyond Yoga.

Erin loves this brand, especially its Spacedye fabric, which provides excellent support while remaining incredibly soft, stretchy, and moisture-resistant. The brand also creates activewear styles that feel fashionable rather than purely functional.

For a nature walk, complete this outfit with a lightweight outer layer, sunglasses, comfortable waterproof walking shoes, a hat, and a water-resistant sling bag or backpack.

Of course, this set is equally suitable for indoor workouts. Simply remove the outdoor accessories, and you have a comfortable outfit perfect for exercising at home, attending a studio class, or relaxing afterward.

Outdoor Style Can Be Both Functional and Fashionable

Outdoor adventures don’t mean you have to sacrifice personal style. With thoughtfully chosen activewear, you can create outfits that support your activities while still reflecting your personality.

Whether you’re heading to the mountains, spending a weekend camping, enjoying a day on the water, or simply taking a walk outdoors, the right clothing can help you feel comfortable, confident, and prepared.

With new seasons approaching, there are always more exciting styles, trends, and outfit ideas to explore. Building a versatile outdoor wardrobe allows you to enjoy every adventure while looking your best.
